The Preparing for Pre-Algebra course focuses on building a strong foundation in preparation for a Pre-Algebra course. The first half of the course will practice basic facts and skills. This includes whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. The second half will introduce integers, expressions, one-step, and two-step equations, and one-step and two-step inequalities. We recommend this course for 5th graders ready to explore these topics or for 6th graders who want an extra year of preparation before starting our Pre-Algebra program.

To enroll in this course, students must have completed 4th-grade math and be ready to explore math and discover their potential for middle and high-school-level courses.

Pre-Algebra Prerequisites:
To enter Pre-Algebra the expectation is that the student is:
  • fluent with +, -, x and รท facts
  • experienced with fractions and decimals
  • in grade 6 or higher
Algebra vs. Pre-Algebra
When trying to decide between Pre-Algebra and Algebra I, we ask six questions. If you can answer yes to the questions below, then Algebra I is the correct choice:
  • Do they have proficiency with fractions?
  • Do they have proficiency with decimals?
  • Do they have proficiency with percents?
  • Have they worked with positive and negative numbers?
  • Have they worked with solving 2-step equations like 2x - 5 = 13?
  • Have they done some graphing (plotting points or graphing lines) on the xy-coordinate plane?
Note: Even if the student struggles with the last two topics, they can still take Algebra I because the course covers these concepts thoroughly. They may need to put in a little extra effort compared to those students who are more familiar with the concepts.

Algebra I - completion of Pre-Algebra
Geometry - completion of Algebra I
Algebra II - completion of Geometry
Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry - completion of Algebra II
Calculus - completion of Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry
