The Preparing for Pre-Algebra course focuses on building a strong foundation in preparation for a Pre-Algebra course. The first half of the course will practice basic facts and skills. This includes whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. The second half will introduce integers, expressions, one-step and two-step equations, and one-step and two-step inequalities. We recommend this course to students who want an extra year of preparation before starting our Pre-Algebra program.
Pre-Algebra Prerequisites:
To enter Pre-Algebra, the expectation is that the student is:
- fluent with +, -, x and รท facts
- experienced with fractions and decimals
- in grade 6 or higher
Algebra vs. Pre-Algebra:
Not sure whether your student should take Pre-Algebra or Algebra I? Use the questions below to help determine which course is the best fit.
If you can answer yes to all six questions, your student is likely ready for Algebra I:
- Do they have proficiency with fractions?
- Do they have proficiency with decimals?
- Do they have proficiency with percents?
- Have they worked with positive and negative numbers?
- Have they worked with solving 2-step equations like 2x - 5 = 13?
- Have they done some graphing (plotting points or graphing lines) on the xy-coordinate plane?
Algebra I - completion of Pre-Algebra
